The Columbia Design League, a Columbia Museum of Art membership affiliate group, invites you to “Strut Your Junk!” at its sixth annual Runaway Runway, a competitive fashion show featuring designs assembled from recycled materials, on Saturday, April 6 at the Township Auditorium.
Runaway Runway is a design competition that brings together talented designers who turn trash into sustainable fashion treasures. The event is Columbia’s premiere spring fashion show, highlighting the value of recycling and living green. While the world is serious about being green, this event proves green can be fun, fabulous, fashionable and funky, too!
Doors open at 7 p.m. at the Township with music by DJ Perry A and bars sponsored by American Harvest Organic Spirit and Fetzer Organic Wines. Host Cyrus Frakes will get the show started at 8 p.m. when more than 50 models will strut fashions created by designers from such a variety of used materials as coffee filters, bottle caps, empty containers, industrial scraps, newspapers and plastic bags. A diverse panel of judges will select five winners based on Mad Skills (craftsmanship), Eco- Fabulous (green ability), Prêt-à-Porter (wear ability) and Rockin’ the Runway (best model). The best overall 2013 Runaway Runway designer receives the Bruce Bahr Award created by Christian Thee. Additional winning design prizes are provided by Clark Ellefson.
The party continues at 10 p.m. at the Runaway Runway After Party downstairs at the Township. Tickets to the fashion show are $15 for general admission, $10 for Students with ID and $50 for VIP with drink tickets included. Tickets to the After Party are $20, or $15 for VIP ticket holders. A portion of the proceeds will go to fund design education. Purchases can be made at the Township box office or online through Ticketmaster.
This fundraiser allows the Columbia Design League to bring speakers from around the nation and around the corner to engage, challenge and inspire us all to appreciate the impact of design on our lives. Join the Columbia Design League and become part of Columbia’s dynamic community of citizens who are working for a brighter future by good design.
Featured designs from the 2012 Runaway Runway fashion show are currently on display at the Meet the Designers: Runaway Runway community gallery at the CMA. From a wedding gown made of discarded ballet shoe ribbons to a look created from car parts, these creations feature post-consumer materials, range in theme, and are wild eco-friendly fashions. The installation is on view through Sunday, May 5.
