Celebrating the Arts, Indie Style

By Daphne Stubbolo

The Columbia art scene will be on full display at this year’s Indie Grits Festival, hosted by the Nickelodeon Theatre. In 2010, Indie Grits was named one of the world’s 20 coolest film festivals by Movie Maker magazine. Now in its sixth year, the festival will not only offer experienced and first time Southern filmmakers the opportunity to exhibit their works, but it also will offer attendees 10 days full of engaging cultural events.

In addition to the films shown each evening, attendees will be able to experience some of the best art, performing arts, music and events around Columbia, including Puppet Slam – experimental short puppetry and object theater. Several local artists will open their personal home studios to attendees, and the South Carolina Philharmonic will perform along with four new silent films.

For the technology-minded, this year’s festival will feature ConvergeSE, a melting pot of web designers and developers who, with their varying range of experiences, will provide an unmatched learning and networking experience.

And let’s not forget the fabulous food! A Slow Food Columbia sustainable tasting party will feature chefs from local “farm to table” restaurants. Each dish will showcase at least one local, sustainably-produced major ingredient.

Indie Grits will be held April 19 to 29 at the Nickelodeon Theater, as well as other locations around Columbia. For tickets and more information, visit www.indiegrits.com.
