Back to School Fashions

The 411 on what to wear this fall

By Katherine Robinson

Photography by Holly Graciano

Watermelons and weeds aren’t the only things that grow under the hot sun of a Carolina summer. Warm weather and a three-month vacation can add inches to young children, leaving behind a closet full of clothes that don’t fit. A new school year is the perfect opportunity to buy new clothes – clothes that not only fit but also make a great first day fashion statement. Columbia’s local children’s boutiques have stocked up on perfect back to school outfits for boys and girls. Because Columbia has two seasons, summer and not summer, these boutiques have options for outfits that transition well from the dog days of summer to early fall. Pima cotton and linen fabrics are lightweight and durable, and pairing them with denim jackets or leggings can keep them in use well into fall.

Local boutiques show attention to detail and know the needs of their customers, and that makes shopping with them the perfect back to school activity.

Ellie Rickenmann, 10, wears a taupe and white KC Parker knit dress with a coordinating KC Parker white denim jacket from Bumble Boutique.

Alexander Meyer, 6, wears a color-blocked play polo from Scout Collection, plaid combat shorts from Frugi Organic Cotton Clothes and slip-on canvas shoes from Chooze in the Transport Print, all from KD’s Treehouse.

(Facing page) Caroline Brantley, 8, wears a Mimi and Maggie indigo dress with Smokey Mountain butterfly boots in green, both from Little Lambs & Ivy. The model’s own feather extension completes this look.
