The South Carolina Department of Archives and History is the repository of more than 325 years of South Carolina history, spanning the 1670s to present day, making it one of the most comprehensive state archival collections in the nation. “At SCDAH, our goal is to connect people to the Palmetto State’s rich history, so they may understand how the past has shaped the world in which we live,” says director Dr. W. Eric Emerson. SCDAH is proud to announce the opening of its latest exhibit this fall, Working for Victory: The Palmetto State and the Great War, which focuses on government and the home front during WWI. The Archives and History Center is a beautiful, modern facility with plenty of space perfect for weddings, special events and conferences. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a free, 12-week, small group program designed for adult cancer survivors. To date, the YMCA of Columbia has served nearly 100 survivors at no cost to them. This program fulfills the important need of supporting cancer survivors in our community. Participants will work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is helping people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body. This program is free to participants and is funded by generous donors to the YMCA’s Annual Campaign. With six locations in the Midlands, the YMCA of Columbia is a leading nonprofit dedicated to changing lives and strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
