At the heart of Central Carolina Community Foundation is a remarkable group of individuals, each trustee chosen strategically to reflect our community’s diversity. Behind the scenes, these individuals, from attorneys to entrepreneurs, dedicate time to uplifting philanthropy.

For nearly 40 years, the Community Foundation board has been led by remarkable leaders who have made significant contributions to the Midlands region. Their efforts have laid a strong foundation for the organization, ensuring its endurance for another 40 years to come. We highlight these servant leaders as we celebrate the Foundation’s upcoming anniversary in September.

Dave Sojourner and Mike Kelly hired JoAnn Turnquist in 2009. Under her leadership, the Foundation’s assets neared $220 million, and over $270 million was distributed in grants and scholarships. “These grants are catalysts for new projects and for others they are a lifeline of support to keep the doors open, but all ultimately improve the quality of life for those living in the Midlands,” says Dave.

Visionary initiatives spearheaded by past board chairs like J. Hagood Tighe have left a lasting mark on the community. Midlands Gives, born from a trip to the Knight Media Forum, unites communities across 11 counties, raising $24 million for local nonprofits since 2014. “The Foundation is a collaborative organization that brings community members, businesses, and nonprofits together to help those in need and improve the quality of life for people living in the Midlands,” says Hagood.

Others, like Bruce Hughes and Carroll Heyward, have created and implemented strategic plans that have guided the nonprofit’s work, helping the Foundation stay focused on its goals.

Leaders like Sharon W. Bryant have helped the Foundation navigate crises, ensuring the organization’s resilience and continuity during the pandemic.

Similarly, Calvin Elam’s advocacy for the expansion of the Foundation’s BullStreet District office has provided a vibrant home for the nonprofit to promote, facilitate, and increase philanthropy, fostering collaboration and innovation in a state-of-the-art facility.

As the Foundation navigates its CEO transition, current Board Chair Cory Manning diligently works towards a smooth handover.

Together, these individuals exemplify the power of community-driven philanthropy, with their collective impact extending far beyond the board room. “The work we do today is the legacy we leave for generations to come,” says Sharon.

The Foundation’s trustees demonstrate the power of helping others through collaboration, inspiring us to continue working towards sustainable impact within the Midlands.
