James Matthews, Terri Wilson

Success means different things to different individuals, yet certain qualities come to mind when we think about successful business people, such as determination, discipline, communication, humility, positivity, and motivation. We would like to feature two accountants with Scott and Company CPAs who regularly exemplify success: Terri Wilson, CPA, and James Matthews, CPA.

Terri Wilson, CPA — Director, Assurance and Advisory Services

Terri earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Presbyterian College and a Master of Accountancy degree from the University of South Carolina. She has nine years of experience in public accounting and was recently promoted to director.

Terri enjoys coaching staff to help them gain experience and grow in their careers. She also likes working through accounting issues and problem-solving. Terri’s aunt is a CPA and was an important influencer for choosing this career.

“The accounting profession can be complex. I approach each task with a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn. I pay attention to details but also keep the overall goal in mind,” says Terri Wilson, CPA.

A fun fact about Terri is that she sang in the choir in college, where she received a minor in music, and currently sings in her church choir.

James Matthews, CPA — Manager, Assurance and Advisory Services

James has a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Accountancy degree from the University of South Carolina. He has six years of accounting experience and was recently promoted to manager. Being a CPA runs in the family! James’ granddad and his father are also accountants.

James fosters a strong commitment to business leadership through team development, and he strongly believes in the importance of good communication. James says, “Communication is always tough — talk to your team and they will talk with you. Also, try to have a positive attitude. Deadlines can be stressful and stress can be contagious.”

Johnny Creech, CPA, is James’ mentor and recently semi-retired boss. Johnny says, “James is a hard worker with a great work ethic. He enjoys helping his peers and is always one to seek out opportunities to do so. He has a positive influence on younger staff and is patient with them.”

James enjoys watching football, hunting, fishing, playing video games, and taking daily walks with his dog.
