Heaven can wait. Columbia, on the other hand, may have a hard time waiting on a new breakfast restaurant coming to Five Points in July. The Flying Biscuit Café, known for its breakfast-and-brunch-all-day menu offerings, is a national franchise with a flair for the eclectic, and is widely recognized for its inviting atmosphere and trendy offerings. Franchisees John Robert Barth and Kevin N. White are opening Columbia’s first location on Harden Street in the new Treadwell Development.

They discovered The Flying Biscuit Café while on a visit to Atlanta and found the food and atmosphere unmatched. After meeting with corporate, the duo subsequently purchased franchise rights to Columbia and Lexington and plan to open a second location in Lexington within a year.

Southern comfort food with a twist is a staple of The Flying Biscuit Café, where favorites such as Love Cakes, Oven Fried Green Tomato BLT, Shrimp and Grits, and “Not Your Mama’s” Pimento Cheese Sandwich accompany a variety of cocktails from Mimosas to Bloody Marys. The café’s ambiance is vibrant and upbeat with bright colors, the franchise’s signature flying angels on the ceiling, and one-of-a-kind artwork on the walls.

John Robert and Kevin plan to put their own spin on the franchise by adding unique touches created by friends, naming signature drinks and special menu items for members of the Columbia community, and hosting small local bands. According to Kevin, “We want to use locals and support Columbia rather than create a completely corporate feel. We want to use special touches from people who are special to us. A friend, Amy Moore, designed fabric that will top tables, three sunflower paintings by Peggy Angel flank the hallway, and wall art by Ryan Brewer can be seen when entering the front doors. Signature drinks include the Barre 3 Rita, a skinny margarita named for Lauren Truslow, and the Straight North, a straight champagne with a nod to Becca North.”

The Flying Biscuit Café will be open seven days a week from 7a.m. until 2 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Columbia’s newest eatery boasts plentiful parking in back and expanded sidewalks in one of Columbia’s most popular shopping and dining destinations.
