Special Olympics South Carolina’s mission is to provide year-round athletic training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. In South Carolina, Special Olympics serves more than 30,700 children and adults and is the sixth largest program in the United States. It provides a fun, healthy, and social opportunity to athletes and empowers them to become leaders and contributing members of their communities.
Statistics show that young people with disabilities face bullying at four times the rate of their nondisabled peers. By partnering with school districts through Unified Champion Schools, Special Olympics South Carolina develops strategies and initiatives to provide younger generations access to meaningful inclusion and spread a message of respect, acceptance, and inclusion for all. Unified Champion Schools has reached more than 300 schools in South Carolina and is developing communities that embrace the culture of “Play Unified. Live Unified.”
