Sam Purnell, DMD, MS, loves to create beautiful smiles! Purnell Orthodontics is locally owned and operated by Dr. Sam Purnell, who offers a tailored orthodontic experience for each of his patients, creating a personalized plan that is unique to every patient’s needs. He specializes in orthodontics for pediatric and adult patients. A native of the Midlands, Dr. Purnell graduated from Ben Lippen School and earned his undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, from Clemson University. He earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed his three-year residency in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. There he earned his Masters of Science in Dentistry and specialty Certificate in Orthodontics. Dr. Purnell is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists and the American Dental Association. He has been selected to the 2023 list of Top Dentists in America by U.S. News & World Report. He is a board member and the immediate past president of the South Carolina Association of Orthodontists. Dr. Purnell is also the speaker on orthodontic topics for the dental residents at PRISMA Health in the General Practice Residency.
Dr. Purnell takes a personal approach to his patients’ orthodontic health care. He says that no two people have the same facial makeup and teeth alignment, and therefore each treatment should be tailored to the individual patient’s needs. Dr. Purnell is married to Katie Tyler Purnell, and they have three children, Pepper (11), Shepard (8), and Yates (6). He prides his practice in caring for each patient like they were a member of his own family.
Purnell Orthodontics has two locations: one in Lexington, and the second, recently opened, in downtown Columbia at 2827 Millwood Avenue.
