James P. Wilson, DMD, MS, is excited to announce his ownership of Palmetto Periodontics following the retirement of Gregg W. McKenzie, DDS. Dr. Wilson is a native of Columbia and spent his middle school and high school years at Camp Zama, Japan. Dr. Wilson received his undergraduate degree from Presbyterian College, cum laude, with honors in 2012 and his dental degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2016. Inspired to serve his country, Dr. Wilson joined the U.S. Army Dental Corps after graduating from MUSC. He practiced as a general dentist at Fort Gordon, Georgia, for one year before completing his specialty training in periodontics through the U.S. Army and receiving his Master of Science in Oral Biology from the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences.
In the summer of 2020, Major Wilson was assigned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, as the chief of periodontics to serve the 101st Airborne Division, 5th Special Forces Group, and 160 Special Operations Aviation Regiment. He was also appointed an assistant professor for the 12-month Advanced Education in General Dentistry program as the periodontics mentor. Dr. Wilson has lectured for the American Academy of Periodontology. As an assistant professor of the AEGD program he taught periodontal surgery, guided implant surgery, bone and soft tissue grafting, and photography, and was the director for the minimal sedation course for three years. He is trained in IV sedation and two separate periodontal laser systems. Dr. Wilson has five publications, including the U.S. Army Periodontics Program’s first publication in the Journal of the American Dental Association. Dr. Wilson is board certified by the American Board of Periodontology in periodontics and implant surgery.
After seven years of active duty, Dr. Wilson and his wife, Katie, a native of Lexington, decided it was time to return home to South Carolina. They will celebrate the third birthday of their daughter, Alice, in June. Dr. Wilson considers it a privilege to meet the periodontal needs of patients entrusted to his care.
