Originally from Greenville, South Carolina, Gene Stuart, M.D., moved to Columbia in 2001 to join Consultants in Gastroenterology after completing his gastroenterology fellowship training program at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. “At UNC, I worked with a diverse group of experts in all aspects of gastroenterology, including irritable bowel syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux disease, inflammatory bowel disease, therapeutic endoscopy, and hepatology. This training background has provided a solid foundation for addressing the variety of issues affecting my patients,” he says.
Dr. Stuart is particularly interested in colon cancer screening, esophageal disorders, diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal procedures, evidence based medicine, and the role of lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise to optimize gastrointestinal health. He is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association, American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. As a lifelong South Carolinian, he is committed to supporting the state and improving the health of its residents. When Dr. Stuart isn’t providing patient care, he spends time with his wife of 32 years, Kathryn Stuart, M.Ed., LPC, who is an independent college counselor. They have two daughters, Sara and Caroline. Consultants in Gastroenterology has nine board certified physicians, all of whom deliver excellent and compassionate care in all aspects of gastroenterology. A team approach has been the key to fulfilling the mission of the group.
