Family Promise of the Midlands (FPM) believes every child deserves a home. When families are in crisis and facing homelessness — living in their cars, renting expensive motel rooms, or camping out in the living rooms of family or friends — Family Promise provides shelter, food, and radical hospitality. At the heart and soul of this mission are volunteers from 33 faith-based congregations in the Midlands. Until the pandemic, host congregations converted classrooms and offices into bedrooms where families could shelter safely and remain together. When the pandemic upended that, FPM’s host and support congregations pivoted to provide the same love and support through our new static site shelter and transitional housing models. They cook meals, play with or read to little ones, and offer a sympathetic ear during what is quite possibly the darkest days of any parents’ lives: when they are unable to provide a home for their children.
This past year, Family Promise of the Midlands started one of their newest programs called Tomorrow’s Promise that:
– provides financial assistance for move-in costs or to prevent homelessness;
– supports children in the household with enrichment activities including athletics, music, and art; and
– holds community engagement events focused on financial literacy, professional developments, and entertaining activities for the children.
During this season of giving, Family Promise wants to thank their volunteers and partner congregations for being the lifeblood of this organization and the catalysts for the work they do together to mitigate the trauma of homelessness, especially for the children.
