Matthew Thoma, M.D., says he feels fortunate to have grown up in and to also be raising a family in South Carolina. “I wanted to be a physician for as long as I can remember,” he says. “Growing up in a small town in South Carolina, I had the utmost admiration for our family doctor, and I try to model my practice after his example, by treating each patient as if they were a member of my family.”
Dr. Thoma graduated from The Citadel in 1998; it prepared him well for medical school at the University of South Carolina, where he met his wife, Kimi. He went on to residency in internal medicine at Wake Forest University in North Carolina. He said it was at Wake Forest that he had the privilege of serving as chief resident. He completed his gastroenterology training at The Cleveland Clinic. However, he was eager to return to South Carolina and join Consultants in Gastroenterology in 2013, bringing with him to Columbia specialty training in endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). Dr. Thoma is currently chief of gastroenterology at Lexington Medical Center and director of endoscopic ultrasound.
“I am passionate about colon cancer prevention and volunteer my time with the Colorectal Cancer Prevention Network to provide colonoscopies to the uninsured and medically underserviced populations of South Carolina and serve on Lexington Medical Center’s Tumor Board. Outside of work, my family and I enjoy the outdoor activities that make Columbia an amazing place to live.”
