Gary A. Bethea, DDS

Gary A. Bethea, DDS, is honored to again be selected by his peers as one of the Top Dentists in the Midlands. Since opening Bethea Family Dentistry in 2018, he has hit the ground running — growing a start-up business and caring for his patients. Every day, he and his team strive to provide “dental excellence made personal,” and it has resulted in amazing relationships, success, and several awards for Bethea Family Dentistry. None of these awards, however, would be possible without Christ, family, his top-notch team, and the amazing support of his community.
Dr. Bethea earned his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina and his dental degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. Upon finishing dental school in 2011, he returned to Columbia to complete a general practice residency at Palmetto (now Prisma) Health Richland.
Dr. Bethea is a member of the South Carolina Dental Association. This past December, he was privileged to be the recipient of the organization’s James B. Edwards Citizenship Award for positively reflecting dentistry and serving the citizens of South Carolina. Dr. Bethea also remains involved with the American Dental Association.
In addition to being active in the profession, Dr. Bethea works equally as hard making an impact in the surrounding community. Last year he and his wife, Dr. Shayla Bethea, established their nonprofit organization, Deeper Than Dentistry, with a focus on mentorship for youth exploring careers in healthcare and other related programs. He also wrote a book titled Deeper Than Dentistry, released in April 2021, to share his testimony on overcoming adversity and his journey into marketplace ministry. All proceeds from its sales have been donated to their nonprofit. When not helping patients, Dr. Bethea loves spending time with Shayla and their four boys – Keon, Gaius, Elijah, and Nolan. He also enjoys fellowshipping with other family and friends, good food, traveling, and pursuing visual storytelling projects.
