The UofSC School of Music’s Chamber Music Residency with the world-renowned Parker Quartet brings a series of public concerts, master classes, community outreach and special opportunities for chamber music enthusiasts each fall and spring.
Thursday night’s program focuses on virtuosity (Zosha Di Castri’s quartet) and the influence of song (Schubert, Kurtag, and Schumann). Zosha’s piece was originally written for the Banff String Quartet competition a few years ago. She wanted to write a tour de force work that would showcase each ensemble’s virtuosity. Schubert, of course, was the master of song. He wrote over 600 of them! So even in his string quartets the element and spirit of song lives inside of it. Kurtag’s officium breve uses the influence of song through his quotation of Webern’s Cantata and Schumann’s A Major quartet builds around the Clara motive – a falling interval of the fifth. A musical motive that captures his love for her.
