DAYBREAK
For more than 14 years, Daybreak Adult Care Services has provided nonmedical services to seniors in their own homes. These customers’ needs can vary greatly. Some seniors might just need someone to drive them to run errands, or someone to help them take care of a pet. Others might need around-the-clock assistance. Care is generally given in private residences, but some clients are in assisted living facilities and nursing homes.
Daybreak has about 180 workers. “We’re a lot bigger, so we have a lot more resources,” owner Coker Day says. If a caregiver isn’t at work one day, someone else will be there. “I guarantee you that we won’t miss a shift, just because we have so much backup.” On the other hand, Day doesn’t want “a revolving door” of caregivers coming in and out. “We try and do everything we can to make sure you don’t have too many caregivers and that you have consistent caregivers coming out to your home.”
Daybreak Adult Care serves clients in Columbia, Lexington, Aiken and Hilton Head. For more information, visit www.daybreakcare.com
LAUREL CREST
On a recent tour with sons who were exploring independent lifestyle options for their mother, one said to his brother, “Everyone here knows the residents. You can go up to anyone — housekeeper, maintenance person, waitstaff — and ask about a resident and they will know who that resident is. You won’t find that everywhere.” There is a warmth about Laurel Crest that has always been difficult to describe, but this observation rings true.
Laurel Crest is a continuing care retirement community overlooking the Saluda River. Laurel Crest offers independent living in apartment and cottage homes as well as assisted living, memory care and nursing care in an intimate setting. But what sets Laurel Crest apart is not the view or the campus – it is the people. Forty-four percent of the employees have been here for more than five years, and many more than 10 years. Residents come from various places and walks of life. They all welcome you to become part of their unique community.

MIDLANDS AREA SENIOR SERVICES
Geriatric care management provides adult children and others who are trying to take care of a senior with expert advice on what is needed to keep the senior safe and as independent as possible. It works best if the service is used before there is a crisis, but in times of crises geriatric care management can still answer those questions about what should be done. The services they arrange may be transportation or home care or even to accompany the senior to the doctor. Help is available to deal with difficult issues such as guardianship or what to do if an elderly parent is still driving and shouldn’t be.

PRESBYTERIAN COMMUNITIES OF SOUTH CAROLINA
Jasmine Place … for Special Moments of Joy and Connection
The difficult and often heartbreaking journey of Alzheimer’s disease has been shared in books, songs and even quilt making. There is no cure or prevention and the statistics are daunting: one in eight older Americans has Alzheimer’s and the economic impact of caregiving is over $200 billion.
The newly expanded Jasmine Place at the Columbia Presbyterian Community is specifically designed for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Spacious apartments feature built in cabinetry and private baths with roll in showers. A compassionate team of caregivers provides comfort and support for residents and their families, and they focus on seeing the person rather than the disease and finding moments of joy and connection. Sometimes that can be as simple as the joy of a friendly pool game.
Recently a Jasmine Place resident and his companion decided to try out the community’s new pool table. No one had any idea he could play pool, but play he did and very well. Pretty soon, the laughter and whoops of excitement emanating from the activities room attracted others. Another resident is now giving pool lessons.
Columbia Presbyterian Community takes heart in the special moments of joy and connection. It is why they do what they do. For more information about Jasmine Place call (803) 796-8700.

In addition to nursing staff, the Activity Department provides many varied activities to meet almost anyone’s interest. More than 100 volunteers enhance the staff of more than 200 to continue “Providing Tender Loving Care since 1968.”

The Haven in the Summit
At The Haven in the Summit, comfort and compassion are merely the start. They know memories may fade, but the spirit and essence of the person behind those memories never diminish.

All staff – caregivers, dietary, housekeepers and management – are trained in this innovative program. Working together, they stimulate memories and maximize the independence of every resident. The planned design of the community – set like a town square with different neighborhoods – encourages independence and triggers memories.
