If you’re tired of the hassles of getting the lawn mower started, climbing a ladder or swinging a paint brush then the Columbia Presbyterian Retirement Community is the place for you. Residency choices range from spacious patio homes and apartments to assisted living, health services and memory support. We take care of all the maintenance headaches and time consuming chores related to home ownership so that you are free to enjoy life to its fullest. We now feature a comprehensive rehabilitation therapy program. Following a hospitalization for an illness, injury or surgery, we offer physical, occupational and speech therapy custom-designed for senior adults. Therapy is delivered in a quiet, intimate setting where you set the pace based on your needs and abilities. Compassionate and dedicated staff will work with you to regain your independence as quickly as possible.

COMFORT KEEPERS
The Columbia Comfort Keepers office was established almost eight years ago, and the franchise provides non-medical, in-home care for all those 18 and over. Some of Comfort Keeper’s clients need assistance only briefly as they recover from a recent surgery, for example, while others use the services daily and for longer durations of time. While most clients are older, they do serve a number of clients in early adulthood with some level of disability. An increasing proportion of their clients have dementia, and they provide experienced staff with special training to do this. An exciting new market involves providing care to new mothers.
Comfort Keepers typically provides service anywhere from one standard three-hour shift per week up to 24/7 care every day of the year. They also have special rates to provide care for one- or two-hour shifts. Service is currently available for most areas of the Midlands from Winnsboro to Orangeburg, and from Elgin to Batesburg-Leesville. Other Comfort Keepers franchises around the state are available to provide care in many other areas.
The goal at Comfort Keepers is to give clients a better quality of life and improve their families’ peace of mind. Their mission statement indicates that they strive to care for their clients as if they were members of their own family.
Comfort Keepers augments an adult’s independent living with assistance providing meal preparation, light housekeeping, transportation to doctors’ offices or other errands outside the home, assistance with bathing, medication monitoring or other routine activities.
Most of their experienced caregivers are females, although some males are on staff, as well. Approximately one-fourth of the staff are Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). Payment is accepted from: private pay (rates are extremely competitive); long term care insurance; community funding resources; and insurance plans including, as applicable, worker’s compensation.
They work to make families aware of different community funding sources that may be available to help pay for care.
The Comfort Keepers franchise agreement requires multiple, national background checks on all employees; these background checks are then repeated monthly. All staff are bonded and insured, and all are covered by workmen’s compensation. Phones are answered 24/7 by an experienced staff member; there are no answering machines or answering service.

HOME LAND SENIOR CARE
Inspired to start this company, the founder of Home Land Senior Care, Christopher Land, found a great need to provide a little extra care to our growing elderly population so they can stay independent in their homes as long as possible. Our mission is to provide outstanding care to our patients and their families – every patient, every time. We are committed to recruiting the most experienced personnel to enable us to maintain the highest standards of care possible for all patients that we serve.
Homeland Senior Care has a competitive edge in that we have a thriving transportation service, Transport Care Services, LLC that is directly linked to this company. This makes it easier for patients to receive not only quality care, but we can transport them to their medical or personal appointments.
Our Caregivers assist nurses and providers with patient care and provide measures as directed by the Registered Nurse (RN). Caregivers assume responsibilities for meeting patient needs such as hygiene, eating, linen changes, etc., while still ensuring confidentiality and patient safety. Our staff is able to provide the best assistance possible and obtain the appropriate knowledge and skills to treat our patients.
Nurses provide a complete nursing assessment on each client and involve the client, family member, or other caregiver in the patient’s care planning process.

LONG’S DRUGS
The company’s mission statement is: “To be the best service oriented company at providing pharmaceutical care for all patients.” Long’s employees strive to exceed this mission.
The best part about Long’s is that you receive great service at the same price (or better) than other drugstores. Patient copays are the same as they would be anywhere. Long’s offers a $4 generic list, and we will find you a coupon whenever possible to reduce copays. Long’s offers FREE home delivery.
When the price is the same and the pills are the same, what happens in the process is what matters most. We call that the “Long’s Experience.”

STILL HOPES RETIREMENT COMMUNITY
At Still Hopes Senior Living Community, wellness means more than just physical fitness. It means growing in mind, body and spirit.
“Our goal is for people at all levels of fitness to enjoy life to the fullest,” Denise Heimlich, Still Hopes Director of Wellness, says. “Our wellness staff works diligently each day to help residents achieve optimal strength, stamina, flexibility, cognitive function, balance and a healthy approach to life.”
The program’s centerpiece is The Marshall A. Shearouse Center for Wellness, a free-standing 12,000 square-foot facility with the only indoor pool for therapy and water aerobics in Columbia. The Center features state-of-the-art exercise equipment, designed for a wide spectrum of abilities, along with a studio for classes and spa/therapy rooms for contract services such as manicures, massage and other specialist care.
In the Still Hopes Wellness Center, residents from all levels of care work out together in classes that are appropriate to their physical ability, not where they live on campus.
“That means that residents from skilled nursing may be exercising along side people who live in the apartment cottages,” Denise says. “The residents love it! Our staff also works out side-by-side with the residents.”
Still Hopes administers a physical fitness assessment for all participants twice a year, so they can see how they are progressing and where they may need more work. For fitness enthusiasts, the community offers another level of training – preparing for a triathlon which includes swim, bike and walk/run.
The Wellness Program extends beyond the Fitness Center to lectures, field trips and programs that highlight the other dimensions of wellness, such as brain fitness, chiropractic therapy, hiking and a course on preserving a meaningful life.
“We found that once our residents realized the full benefits of physical fitness, we were able to tie that in with mental and emotional health,” Denise says. “The synergy between socialization and fitness – like exercising with peers and staff and remaining healthy enough to be involved in the community – is a strong motivator.
“Given the level of participation in our fitness programs – about 80 percent of residents – I would say that most, if not all, are willing and able to learn and grow, regardless of whether they are frail or fit to start with,” she adds.
The Still Hopes Wellness Program is available to residents and to non-residents throughout the community age 55 or older. Non-residents may choose to participate in single classes or select from three, six or 12-month memberships.
