It all started with a dining room table. After empty-nesters John and Sandra Hall transitioned to a smaller home a few years ago, they found themselves having to crowd the family around their grand dining room table during the holidays. “We realized that we needed more space, and we set out to begin our plan for renovations,” says John, an SCE&G customer.
The first step of the renovation process for the Halls, before meeting with builders and designers, was contacting SCE&G to inquire about the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® Program.
SCE&G’s sponsorship of the national Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® Program is designed to improve the comfort, energy efficiency, safety and durability of the home through a comprehensive “whole house” approach.
Beginning with a wide-ranging home energy assessment, participating contractors help identify and install the energy-saving home improvements and solutions that best fit a home and budget. For instance, the assessment will include a blower door test, the best way to measure air leaks in the home.
“We were blown away with the thoroughness of the process,” says John. Comfort Services was the participating contractor that performed the Halls’ assessment, and based on the findings, the Halls decided to replace ductwork, purchase a new water heater and purchase an ENERGY STAR® HVAC unit to support their future renovated space.
While there is a customized solution for every customer, some typical improvements include sealing air leaks and adding insulation, upgrading or replacing heating and cooling systems, sealing and insulating ductwork, and/or replacing water heating systems.
Although an initial investment is required, the program helps homeowners save money now and in the future with rebates of up to $2,500 on energy-saving home improvements.
“By far, the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® Program has been the best money we’ve spent so far on our renovation,” says John. “And once the renovation is complete we can’t wait to comfortably seat our family in the dining room during the holidays.”
Get started now. To be eligible, participants must be residential electric customers of SCE&G. Installation and services must be performed by a participating contractor in order to qualify for rebates. For more information, visit sceg.com/homecomfort.
