Can’t stomach the lurching rides at the State Fair? Not to worry — forgo somersaulting through the sky and take a stroll through the Old Rose Show. Hosted annually by The Palmetto Garden Club at the South Carolina State Fair, the Old Rose Show displays exquisite varieties of “old roses.” The Palmetto Garden Club was formed in 1935 and became a member of Garden Club of America in 1941. During The Palmetto Garden Club’s initial start up, the organization focused special interest on old roses.
For 65 years the Palmetto Garden Club has continued to propagate roses and share the flora’s beauty with fair-goers. The old rose exhibit includes roses from Riverbanks Botanical Garden, personal gardens of The Palmetto Garden Club members and contributions from the general public.
In order to display personal roses in the Old Rose Show, rules and regulations guide the active participators. Awards donated by the Palmetto Garden Club and Roses Unlimited recognize outstanding rose exhibits and foster friendly competition. May the best rose win! For more information visit the S.C.
