Teddy, a mini goldendoodle purchased from a GANA breeder.
Puppy breath alone is enough to convince most people to buy a new little soulmate. Add nice spring weather and a yearning for those constant cuddles, and the time feels perfect for contacting breeders or visiting a shelter! If you’re on the brink of making this exciting purchase, here are some tidbits to consider ahead of time.
As popular as goldendoodles have become, be sure to contact a certified Goldendoodle Association of North America breeder. GANA breeders go through rigorous training and regular evaluations to qualify with the intent to protect the integrity of the breed. Not only will these breeders ensure you buy a healthy puppy, they will also provide you with the size dog you desire. There are countless stories of people buying what they are deceptively told is a mini goldendoodle (ranging from 20 to 35 pounds) that grows to be 65 pounds.
One notion to consider is to buy littermates. While you will still want to spend loads of time with your puppies, having two of them creates a built-in playmate for constant companionship for the time you aren’t able to be home. Opinions vary on buying littermates, but many dog owners have found it to be quite a positive experience. Just be sure they also have individual time away from each other so that they don’t become co-dependent.
Not all breeds should be trained the same way. Rhodesian ridgebacks, for instance, are quite different in how they respond to correction. As delightful and sweet as they are, they can also be stubborn and independent. They respond better to positive reinforcement and receiving treats for the desired behavior as opposed to being strongly reprimanded for negative behavior. And keep the instruction simple, firm, and train in short sessions.
For your next sweet companion, consider rescuing a puppy from a local shelter. Mixed breeds are often not only incredibly smart with uncommon, fun personalities, but also they typically develop a remarkable bond with the person who has given them a chance for a happy life.
Whatever breed you select, you are sure to be the envy of your neighborhood with your new bouncing ball of joy!
