CARROLL CAMPBELL PLACE
A Home Away from Home
Designed by nationally renowned health care architects, Carroll Campbell Place offers exemplary care in a friendly, non-institutional environment for people with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. The 25,000-square-foot facility is comprised of two 18-bed units that provide the warmth and comfort of home.
Its features have been crafted with detail and purpose, providing residents with a sense of security in a tranquil and dignified setting. These include soothing, soft color schemes, automatic restroom lighting, recessed doors and short hallways to minimize wandering, and numerous windows that offer beautiful views while assisting in orientation to time and season. Each private room has a “memory box” for cherished items to help with personal recognition. And even the nurses’ stations fit into the home-like environment. In addition, Carroll Campbell Place offers controlled access, allowing residents the freedom they desire with the safety they need.
The peaceful atmosphere of Carroll Campbell Place also extends beyond its walls. Situated in a serene setting with a country feel, the center incorporates bird aviaries and access to Mama Sue’s Garden. These two outdoor therapeutic gardens provide residents with the freedom to enjoy being outside in a protected environment. The gardens feature fountains, water walls, music, sitting areas and walking paths.
COMFORT KEEPERS
The Columbia Comfort Keepers office was established almost seven years ago, and the franchise provides non-medical, in-home care for all those 18 and over. Some of Comfort Keeper’s clients need assistance only briefly as they recover from a recent surgery, for example, while others use the services daily and for longer durations of time. While most clients are older, they do serve a number of clients in early adulthood with some level of disability. An increasing proportion of their clients have dementia, and they provide experienced staff with special training to do this. An exciting new market involves providing care to new mothers.
Comfort Keepers typically provides service anywhere from one standard three-hour shift per week up to 24/7 care every day of the year. They also have special rates to provide care for one- or two-hour shifts. Service is currently available for most areas of the Midlands from Winnsboro to Orangeburg, and from Elgin to Batesburg-Leesville. Other Comfort Keepers franchises around the state are available to provide care in many other areas.
The goal at Comfort Keepers is to give clients a better quality of life and improve their families’ peace of mind. Their mission statement indicates that they strive to care for their clients as if they were members of their own family.
Comfort Keepers augments an adult’s independent living with assistance providing meal preparation, light housekeeping, transportation to doctors’ offices or other errands outside the home, assistance with bathing, medication monitoring or other routine activities.
Most of their experienced caregivers are females, although some males are on staff, as well. Approximately one-fourth of the staff are Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). Payment is accepted from: private pay (rates are extremely competitive); long term care insurance; community funding resources; and insurance plans including, as applicable, worker’s compensation
They work to make families aware of different community funding sources that may be available to help pay for care.
The Comfort Keepers franchise agreement requires multiple, national background checks on all employees; these background checks are then repeated monthly. All staff are bonded and insured, and all are covered by workmen’s compensation. Phones are answered 24/7 by an experienced staff member; there are no answering machines or answering service.

SALUDA NURSING HOME
Saluda Nursing Center (SNC) is truly a special place filled with special residents cared for and loved by special people. The success is best told by relating the stories of a few of the thousands who have called on SNC for help.
One lady came to SNC from Brockport, N.Y., for rehab therapy to help her Parkinsonism. She came in by wheelchair via Columbia Airport. At the end of 30 days, she not only could walk but she also could drive her car again. While at SNC she was able to go on a trip to Myrtle Beach and walk on the sandy beach. She said that the trip to SNC was her “first true vacation.”
Another resident spent her last 11 years at SNC and told the administrator they were the best years of her life. Not a shabby statement from a lady who had raised five loving children.
Another young resident’s family was told that their daughter would never recover from a severe car accident. She not only relearned how to walk and talk, but also returned to school and lives at home today.
Another man was told he would never walk again after a farming accident that resulted in a spinal injury. It took 13 months and a lot of hard work on his part as well as that of the staff, but he was able to return to his home and farm and now does all his own work including riding the tractor. He has been able to resume his previous lifestyle.
Field trips, shopping trips, The S.C. State Fair, Riverbanks Zoo, the circus and fishing trips, are just a few of the outings SNC makes. In-house entertainment includes games on the Wii, men’s breakfast meetings, women’s breakfast meetings and a large beautiful greenhouse, just to name a few.
SNC’s in-house rehab therapy team and professional nursing staff provide an outstanding level of care in a clean and safe environment with overwhelming community support.
