David H. Hammett, M.D.; Avra B. Hammett, B.A., M.A.T.
How did your practice begin?
I moved to Columbia in 2006 as a clinical professor of neurology at USC, and it was easy to see that the Midlands was under-served in neurology. After several years, I moved into private practice, and then in 2016, my wife, Avra, and I opened The Hammett Clinic with the simple goal of doing what we do best — seeing patients!
What is your mission?
As an independently owned and operated physician practice, we are determined to maintain our focus on the needs of patients. This is in contrast to some worrisome trends in today’s complex world of medical care. Many physicians and practices are falling under the influence of larger entities, whose interests can sometimes get in the way of how we care for patients.
What differentiates your practice from other specialists in the field?
The Hammett Clinic specializes in the management of migraines and difficult headaches. Migraine is very common and often debilitating. Thankfully, recent advances are safe and effective. One of the most reliably effective options is the medical use of Botox for migraine management. In addition, we use medical Botox and similar procedures to treat movement disorders, muscle problems after stroke, and a variety of other issues. The Hammett Clinic also offers a full array of cosmetic and aesthetic treatments.
How do you keep up with the latest advances in your field?
Physicians are life-long learners, with an inherent desire to review the latest research and investigate new advances. I actively help train other physicians and, likewise, I continue my own training by interacting with other experts.
What is your biggest challenge?
I am very concerned about navigating our current health care system. Cost burdens are nearly always confusing and often nonsensical. Nevertheless, I am absolutely convinced the United States has the best doctors in the world — including my colleagues here in the Midlands and throughout South Carolina. I hope we all, as physicians, can maintain or take back control of the profession, because we are the strongest advocates for patients.
