Getting Down to Business: Abacus Planning Group

Sitting Down with Alex Chastain, CFP

What is the mission of your business?

Our mission is to be the “go-to” financial advisory firm for entrepreneurial families with shared assets. Our families typically own businesses, commercial real estate, timber, intellectual property, or oil and gas properties.

What differentiates your business from other specialists in the field?

• Fiduciary — We are fiduciaries first and foremost. From day one, we have committed ourselves to putting our client’s interest above all others whether we are recommending an investment, evaluating an insurance policy, or funding a charitable program.

• Execution (Peace of Mind) — We provide clients with “peace of mind” by taking on the various tasks and decisions that burden our clients, while building and activating a financial plan that realizes their goals. By taking on the nitty-gritty of managing their finances, we allow clients to focus more on “what’s important to them.” We make your to-do list shorter, not longer!

• Team of Professionals — We strive to provide clients with an exceptional client experience by providing a team of professionals who give detailed advice in specific areas, along with the input of a complete team to ensure that we provide clients with an integrated, holistic approach to managing wealth by providing smart, sustainable, efficient solutions to complex challenges along the way.

What do you like best about your line of work?

The work we do is unique as each of our clients. Every day is different because every client is different. Day to day, you never know what problem or situation you may be asked to collaborate on behalf of a client. Case by case: Goals are unique; facts and figures are different; and, priorities change. Personally, I really like to learn, so I am fortunate that this is not a “static field of work” and requires continuous learning. We always have new rules, regulations, client situations, tools, and planning techniques to master and integrate into a client’s plan. We have the honor of listening to our clients’ stories – hearing about their pasts, what’s important to them, and where they’re headed. Everyone’s path is unique. There’s no better feeling than knowing that I have, or our firm has, had a positive impact on a client’s life. Usually, these are financial decisions, but sometimes it applies in other areas. We have had clients author books, start companies, create new non-profit organizations — each day brings its own new surprise.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about your business?

Our pygmy goats’ names are Elvis and Costello. We are typically hosting a dog in the office, whether the dog is coming to a client’s meeting or joining an employee at his or her desk. Best of all, each employee has a one month sabbatical after each five years of employment.
