Fountains

Anchors in the garden

By Natalie Meggs

Photography by Robert Clark and Jeff Amberg

When Milby and Bob Mundy want to escape to a mountain retreat, they just step into their backyard. This rock fountain and waterfall is canopied by a large maple tree and is enjoyed by the Mundy’s all year long, especially in the fall and winter months when they spend ample time outside around their fireplace. The large stone was brought in by Rock Solid in Lexington and is surrounded by autumn ferns and river irises that bloom every spring.

Judy and Alec Chaplin’s fountain and terrace is a delightful vantage point to view the rest of the garden. The fountain, designed by Elizabeth Rice with beautiful brickwork by Hay Hill Garden Market, make this area in the yard the perfect space to sit and enjoy the soft trickling of water. The perimeter is lined with Ajuga, designed by Mary T. Dial.

Lane and William Haselden’s fountain is the focal point of their backyard and provides their family with soothing, peaceful sounds of water all year long. The stone fountain was purchased from Hay Hill Garden Market, and with the help of Mary T. Dial and Blue Moon Landscaping, they designed the perfect setting. Flanked on both sides by podocarpus, the fountain is the star of their formal garden.

Judy and Alec Chaplin’s fountain and trellis, both from Hay Hill Garden Market, add a tranquil therapeutic effect to this outdoor living space. Confederate jasmine winds its way around the trellis to give a green backdrop for the fountain and the urns on each side. The urns are planted seasonally by Mary T. Dial and contain autumn fern and Dragon Wing Begonia. The Dragon Wing Begonia inspired the color of the cushions for the vintage wicker chairs and garden seats.
