When contacting The Houston House to design a master bedroom, the client’s wish was for it be a happy space, a place to harbor in comfort from the everyday. Original art always solicits an emotion, and local artist Kelly Pelfrey delivers with her cheerful color palette and Southern reflections. Her painting “Overflowing with Gratitude” with its breezy marsh and sweeping clouds in peaceful blues and greens was the perfect inspiration for this design.
Drawing from the painting’s cues, a custom upholstered bed in a rich navy velvet was incorporated. Layers of textures and multiple patterns work together, including metallic grasscloth wallpaper, varying stripes, gray-washed furniture, and weathered lighting. Pinch-pleat drapes with tape trim continue the pattern play, and an antique glass mirrored front wardrobe adds sophistication along with storage. A cozy recliner creates the perfect opportunity to enjoy a good book. Brightly colored throw pillows in royal blue complete the room and invite joy.
