Dent Middle School is making a positive impact in the community, and its efforts have not gone unnoticed. The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance program has named the school as one of 77 Mix It Up Model Schools for its exemplary efforts to foster respect and understanding among students during the 2011-2012 school year.
Mix It Up Model Schools must meet five criteria: they must host a Mix It Up at Lunch Day; include different members of the school’s community – such as cafeteria staff, aides, administrators, teachers and students – in organizing the event; follow this event up with at least two additional Mix It Up-related programs or events; publicize the event and program; and finally the event must be seen as a success by both students and school officials.
Mix It Up Day offers students the opportunity to move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch. Last year a total of 5,500 schools across the nation took part in the event.
Congratulations to Dent Middle School for setting an example for the community!
