What is something people would be surprised to learn about you or your business?
Gastroenterologists are the experts in digestive health. They diagnose and treat many conditions including gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), swallowing problems, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatic and liver disease. They are clearly the experts at performing endoscopic procedures such as colonoscopy and upper endoscopy, as well as screening for colon polyps and colon cancer.
How did your business begin?
Consultants in Gastroenterology began as a small practice in Lexington County in the 1970s and has now grown to be the largest gastroenterology practice in the Midlands. There are eight board certified gastroenterologists, four mid-level providers and more than 100 dedicated employees working in four locations, including two free-standing endoscopy centers in Lexington and Richland counties. The physicians perform more outpatient procedures than any other group in the state of South Carolina. It is also the only practice that offers the advanced procedure called Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) that allows for more detailed examination of some of the critical internal organs.
What is the mission of your business?
The mission of Consultants in Gastroenterology is simple — “to deliver outstanding medical care in the field of gastroenterology.” That is the goal every day. Because of that commitment, Consultants in Gastroenterology is the first practice in the state to be recognized by a major insurance company for demonstrating outstanding quality in the performance of endoscopic procedures.
What differentiates your business from other specialists in the field?
In this time of consolidation and physician employment, Consultants in Gastroenterology is one of the few practices in the area that remains independent. The physicians are not employed by a hospital or associated with any out-of-state corporation. This independence allows for a more flexible and cost-effective delivery of care to the patients. It is a privilege to serve the citizens of our area. Though there are challenges to the delivery of health care, Consultants in Gastroenterology is poised to continue as a leader in the Midlands.
