If you head a couple miles down the road, just past the peach orchards you’ll find nestled in the pine trees a 66-year-old Jamaican company. What are the odds? The Best Dressed Chicken is a small-bird poultry company with two specialties — transforming lives and producing the finest chicken. This September, the company is celebrating its 5th year of operating here in South Carolina. But how did this family that provides care beyond the coop end up next door?
It’s 1958 in Jamaica, and a man named Sydney Levy saw that his community had a desperate need. At that time, most people of the island nation raised their own chickens and sold them live to friends, family, and neighbors. One disease or disaster, and your neighborhood would be without chicken for the season. Levy dreamed of bringing the convenience of “dressed” chickens — plucked and cleaned — to families across the island. This vision became a reality as the people of Jamaica took hold of it with both hands, and The Best Dressed Chicken brand was born. Sixty-six years and three generations later, Mr. Levy’s son and grandsons have brought that same commitment to people across the ocean in the United States.
While producing the highest quality chicken is our profession, at the end of the day, people are our passion. Providing families with the tasty and tender chicken that they crave is just one of the ways that we live out that passion. We believe in the power of family — not just our own but every family that welcomes our product to their table. It’s tied into the fabric of who we are, and you can see it right in our mission statement: “With God’s guidance, we shall efficiently manage the company … with an attitude of service and commitment to truth, fairness, and the building of goodwill.” The Best Dressed Chicken is grown by folks who truly care, so if you see someone around town wearing that classic chicken logo, don’t forget to say hello!
