Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of accidental childhood death and injury. Buckle Buddies SC, a program of Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and Safe Kids Midlands, aims to reduce injuries and keep more children safe by providing education on proper car seat usage and installation.
Emily Marr, coordinator of Safe Kids Midlands, says that the goal of the program is to make new and safe car seats accessible to all families in the Midlands. The car seats can be purchased at 60 percent less than consumer pricing at the Birth Place on the fourth floor of Palmetto Health Richland Hospital.
Five types of car seats are being offered: infant car beds, infant carrier seats, convertible seats, forward facing seats with high weight harnesses and backless booster seats.
Buckle Buddies also offers other assistance in child passenger safety, including free monthly child passenger safety classes and car seat check ups. All of these events are free and designed to decrease the accidental injury or death of children.
